“It is out of His Mercy that He has put for you night and day, that you may rest therein (i.e. during the night) and that you may seek of His Bounty (i.e. during the day), and in order that you may be grateful.” (28:73)
This is another issue of our society which appears to be clearly insignificant. No attention is diverted towards it as if it has become our practice. Be it the parents or children, any age group, nowadays is the trend of wide awake late at nights.
You might be wondering what sort of subject is that. But regrettably, these minor and immaterial matters which we ignore, either consciously or subconsciously, prove to be a real harm for us.
Now if we think over the verse, it conveys a strong message. The night is described for rest, break, relax, calm, ease and sleep. The day has been designed for abundance, reward, price and wealth so that you may be thankful.
In contrast, what we observe is that the day is for sleeping and night is for staying up late. Without any offence, we are more or less like owls. Moreover, we have justifications and explanations for our act.
No doubt, Karachi is a busy city and business continues till late nights. For students as me, no doubt the studies are tough and we need to stay awake to complete the assignments. But these all are justifications. We never try to wake up early and then begin our tasks instead we prefer the late nights. Then there are those supporting this act like the midnight deals, midnight cravings. What are these? They are backing the youth for this act ‘Okay, we’ll provide you with food and stay awake.’
Ever thought of keeping things at place? Ever thought the purpose behind His creations and His order of running the system? Okay imagine the sun at night! Imagine the moon and stars in daylight. Can you? There is an order, a manner, a style, a way He is running this universe. Then why can’t we follow the manner? Why are we creating our own systems?
Staying up late may cause high blood sugar levels, diabetes, obesity, heart diseases, weakened immune system. This is not the end. The other side effects are increased stress levels, reduced creativity and moodiness.
And so, we can determine more easily and unmistakably the best choice for us and for our healthy living. Undeniably, He selects the best for His creation.
